Insulated Garage Doors for Las Vegas Homes

The Short Answer

An insulated door drops a summer garage by 15 to 25 degrees, runs quieter, and resists dents. If your garage is attached to your house or you use it for anything besides parking, this is the upgrade that matters most in our climate.

A Structure Upgrade Wearing a Comfort Costume

The insulation rating sells the door, but the construction is half the value. Foam core panels resist dents, do not flex and pop in afternoon sun, and run the track more quietly than any single layer door can.

In our climate the comfort case is obvious. But owners are often more delighted by the sound. The door itself becomes the quietest part of the system.

The Two Foam Types

Foam board doors use rigid boards fitted inside the panel. They insulate decently and cost less. Injected foam doors have foam expanded in place so it bonds to both steel skins. They insulate better, feel far stiffer, and run quieter. If your budget reaches the injected foam door, reach.

Where It Matters Most

Attached garages under or beside living space. Garages used as gyms, shops, or offices. West facing doors that take full afternoon sun. And any home where the garage is the main entrance.

The honest exception is a detached garage used only for parking. That door gains little from insulation, and we will tell you to put the money into hardware instead.

Common Questions

What insulation rating do I need in Las Vegas?

A mid range rating covers most attached garages well. Higher ratings make sense for garages you heat or cool. Beyond that, the seals and walls start to matter more than the door's number.

Will an insulated door cut my power bill?

It helps if your garage is attached. A cooler garage leaks less heat into the house, which eases the load on your AC. The bigger win is a garage you can actually use in July.

Can I insulate my existing door instead?

Kits exist, but they add weight the springs were not sized for and never match a factory built insulated door. If your door is aging anyway, the factory insulated replacement is the better buy.
