Most garage door problems can wait until morning, but a broken spring with a car trapped inside, a door stuck open overnight, or a door hit by a vehicle should get a call tonight. The short version

Is it a real emergency or can it wait

Ask two questions. Is your home secure, and is anyone in danger? If the door is closed and latched, you are mostly looking at an inconvenience. If the door is open, crooked, or cannot be closed, you have a security problem and sometimes a safety problem.

Call tonight for a door stuck open, a door off the track, a snapped cable that dropped one side, a vehicle strike, a door that will not close in a storm, or a door that is jammed with a car or a person on the wrong side of it.

Usually fine until morning when the door is closed and working by hand, a remote that stopped, a noisy roller, a sensor that blinks, a worn weather seal, or a spring that broke while the door is shut and your cars are outside. A broken spring on a closed door is a good job for a calm daytime visit, and it is the one most people book in a rush for no reason.

What you can safely check in five minutes

Do these from the floor, standing clear of the door. No ladder, no tools on the springs.

• Look at the door from the side. Is it level, or does one corner sag?
• Look at the spring above the door. A torsion spring that snapped shows a gap of a few inches in the coil.
• Check the wall button for a lock light. A locked button stops every remote.
• Wave a hand across the sensors near the floor. A flashing light on one means misaligned or blocked sensors.
• Check the power. A tripped breaker or a dead outlet looks just like a dead opener.

Safety. Springs and cables hold hundreds of pounds of tension and can cause serious injury. Do not touch them. Unplug the opener before you do anything near the door.

The emergency release and when not to pull it

The red cord with the handle lets you disconnect the door from the opener. It does not lift the door for you. Pull it only when the door is fully closed and the problem is the opener or the power, so you can open the door by hand and get your car out.

Do not pull it when the door is open or part way up. As one Alabama door company explains, with a weak or broken spring the opener may be the only thing holding the door, and pulling the cord can let the whole door drop. The same page says a door that feels heavy, crooked, or uneven is a reason to stop and call.

That is also why you should not keep pressing the button on a broken spring. Openers are not built to lift the full weight of the door and you can strip the gear or damage the cables.

Securing an open garage overnight

An open garage is an invitation, and it also leaves the interior door to your house as the only barrier. Take these steps while you wait.

• Lock the door between the garage and your home and use the deadbolt.
• Pull valuables, bikes and tools out of sight, and take your remotes out of any car left inside.
• Unplug the opener so nobody can trigger it, and so a bad sensor cannot start the door moving.
• Park a car across the opening if the door cannot close and your driveway allows it.
• Leave a light on and tell a neighbor.

Door stuck open in the summer heat

A normal year in Las Vegas has about 78 days at 100 degrees or higher and 9 days at 110 or higher, per the National Weather Service. A garage left open in that heat turns into an oven, and it is rough on paint, cars and anything stored inside. Pets and kids should stay out of it.

Heat also changes how doors behave. Metal tracks and sensor brackets expand, and a door can bind that ran fine in the morning. If you must leave the garage open for a few hours, shut the door to the house and run a fan, but get the door closed that night.

Power outage

A dead opener is not a broken door. If the power is out, check the NV Energy outage map first so you know whether it is your breaker or the block. If the whole street is dark, the door is fine and you only need to get in or out.

With the door fully closed, pull the red release cord, lift the door by hand, and stay clear while it moves. Close it by hand when you are done and reconnect the opener after power returns.

Many new openers have a battery. LiftMaster says its integrated backup battery usually lasts one to two years and its status light tells you when to replace it. If your opener keeps dying in outages, ask us about an opener repair or a replacement with backup.

A car hit the door

Stay out from under the door and keep everyone away from the panels. A damaged door can have a bent track, a cracked panel, and cables out of the drum all at once.

Do not run the opener. Take photos from outside before anyone touches it. Call your insurance company if the repair will be large and ask what they need from you. We can secure the opening the same night and rebuild the door after. Our vehicle impact repair page covers the process.

What after hours repair costs

We do not publish a price list. We do give a firm written price at your door before work starts, and we tell you the after hours price on the phone. For a sense of the market, here are third party figures.

HomeAdvisor puts the average garage door repair at $265 and a spring replacement at $180 to $350, and tells you to budget for emergency fees when a door fails outside business hours. Raynor says typical repairs run $150 to $350 and that emergency or after hours jobs can double the price. Service call fees average $50 to $75 and labor runs $75 to $150 an hour.

How to avoid emergency scam operators

The Better Business Bureau warns that emergency repair ads can lead to inflated parts and work. Its warning signs are generic business names, no real address, no marked vehicle, a price that seems too good, pressure to decide now, and a demand for payment in full before work.

In Nevada, check three things before anyone starts.

1. License. Search the number in the Board's online contractor search. Ours is NSCB 0082445, and you can see it on our check our license page.
2. Price. Get a written price for parts, labor and the after hours fee before the tech touches the door.
3. Deposit. The Board's consumer checklist says a down payment cannot exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less, unless the contractor posts a $100,000 bond. It also says not to pay cash and not to make the final payment until you are satisfied.

A tech who refuses to name a price until after the door is taken apart is a tech to send home.

When it is repair and when it is replace

An emergency is the wrong time to buy a new door, so fix the immediate problem first and decide later. A spring, cable, or off track fix on a door in good shape is usually a repair.
