Garage Spring Repair in Las Vegas

The Short Answer

Garage door spring repair is the most common call we get in Las Vegas. If you heard a loud bang and now the door will not lift, a spring broke. Do not force the door. We come the same day on most calls, replace the springs in pairs, balance the door, and give you a firm written price before any work starts.

Watch a pro level a crooked garage door. He works with the springs still under tension and warns that the wrong tools can seriously hurt or kill you. That is why we tell homeowners to leave springs to a pro.

The Loud Bang and the Door That Will Not Lift

Most people find out a spring broke in one of two ways. They hear a bang like a firecracker in the garage. Or the opener strains and gives up because the door suddenly weighs hundreds of pounds. The springs do the real lifting, not the opener. When a spring breaks, all that weight comes back.

If your spring broke, stop using the door. Do not run the opener over and over. That can strip its gears. If your car is trapped inside, call us. Getting a door open safely with a broken spring is a job for a pro.

Why Springs Break Faster in Las Vegas

Springs are rated by cycles. One open and one close is one cycle. Most builder springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. Our extreme heat wears out the metal faster. If your home was built in the 2000s and still has its first springs, they are near the end. We install upgraded springs rated for 25,000 cycles or more for a small extra cost.

How We Fix It

Most Las Vegas homes use torsion springs. Those are the coiled springs on a bar above the door. We stock all the common sizes on our trucks. On doors with two springs, we replace both at once. The old spring has the same wear as the broken one, and it will fail soon anyway.

Every spring job includes more than the spring. We check the cables and bearings. We balance the door. We reset the opener so its safety reverse works right. Then we test everything before we leave.

Cost, Timing, and What Is Included

Every door is a little different, so we price spring repair at your garage and not with a guess over the phone. You get one firm written price before we touch the door, and it does not change when the job is done. Right now our spring coupon takes $100 off any broken spring replacement, any door size.

Our trucks carry the common spring sizes, so most spring jobs are finished in one visit. The price covers the new springs, a check of the cables, drums, and bearings, a full balance, and a reset of the opener safety reverse. Want the next spring to last much longer? Ask about springs rated for 25,000 cycles or more.

Updated

If you heard a bang and the door will not lift, a spring broke, and the right fix is a matched pair sized to your exact door by wire size, inside diameter and length. A spring that is close is not good enough. The wrong one leaves the door heavy, or sends it flying up.

This guide covers what the page above does not. You will learn how a pro picks the spring, what the cycle ratings mean in years, what the going price ranges are, how the cheap phone quote works, and how to check any company before you let them near a wound spring.

The short version

  • A broken torsion spring is split in two with a gap you can see. Do not lift the door.
  • Springs are sized by wire size, inside diameter, length and winding direction. Door weight sets all four.
  • Most springs are designed for 10,000 cycles. A longer rated spring costs a little more and can last years longer.
  • Replace both springs on a two spring door. They have the same wear.
  • Third party price guides put a spring job at about $120 to $350. A very low phone price is a warning sign.
  • Check the contractor license before work starts. It takes two minutes.

What you can safely check in 5 minutes

Stay on the floor and look. Do not touch the spring, the cables or the bottom of the door. Keep kids and pets out of the garage, and unplug the opener so nobody hits the button by habit.

Look up at the bar above the door. Torsion springs sit in the middle above the opening, and a broken one shows a gap where the coil split in two. Extension springs run along the top of each side track. A broken one is stretched out or has coils spaced unevenly. Clopay lists the same signs.

Now count the springs and look for a label, a color mark or a tag. Take a clear photo of the spring and the bar. Then check that the door is fully down or fully up. If it is stuck halfway, leave it alone and call us. A door that is not held by its springs can fall.

Torsion or extension, and why it matters

Most Las Vegas homes have torsion springs on a bar above the door. Older and lighter doors can have extension springs along the side tracks. Clopay says torsion springs often run 10,000 to 20,000 cycles and give smoother, more controlled lifting. Extension springs cost less and wear out faster.

That is why the type changes the quote. A torsion job means winding new springs on the bar under real tension. An extension job means new springs on each side, with the pulleys and cables checked at the same time. Amarr warns that extension systems have more parts that can go wrong when someone puts them together for the first time.

If you are not sure which you have, tell us what you see. A photo settles it fast.

How a pro sizes the right spring

A spring is not a one size part. The door weight decides everything. A heavy insulated double door needs a stronger spring than a light single door, even if the opening looks the same.

The Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA) lists what a tech measures on a torsion spring. Wire size comes first, best taken with a wire gauge. Next is the inside diameter, to the nearest 1/16 inch. Then the overall length with the spring unwound. Last, the winding direction, which is right hand or left hand.

Those numbers feed a strength rating called IPPT, short for inch pounds per turn. A DASMA magazine feature by a spring maker says a tech picks the diameter and wire size first, then uses an IPPT chart to land on the length. It adds that the most common diameters are 1 3/4 inch to 2 inch, and that a larger diameter lasts longer.

What goes wrong when the size is off? Amarr describes it this way. Too loose, and the door struggles to open but closes fast. Too tight, and it opens fast but barely closes. Either way, the opener takes the strain.

Cycle ratings in real years

One cycle is one open and one close. Clopay says most springs are designed to last 10,000 cycles. Higher rated springs use heavier wire or a larger diameter built to last longer, and a pro can quote you one.

The math is simple, so do it for your house. Divide 10,000 by the number of times you open the door each day, then by 365. A family that opens the door twice a day gets about 13.7 years. Four times a day gives about 6.8 years. Six times a day gives about 4.6 years. A 25,000 cycle spring at four times a day gives about 17.1 years.

If you want the longer story on why Valley springs go early, read our why springs break in Las Vegas post.

One spring or two

Many single doors have one spring. Many double doors have two, one on each side of the center. If yours has two and one broke, the other is the same age and has done the same number of cycles. Clopay says to replace both at the same time, since springs are wear parts.

There is a second reason. A new spring next to a tired one can lift unevenly, and the door can hang crooked. Doing both in one visit costs less than two calls.

What a proper spring job includes

The spring is only part of the visit. A good job covers each of these steps.

  • Lock the door in place so it cannot move while the springs are wound.
  • Match the new springs to your door by wire size, diameter, length and winding direction.
  • Check the cable drums, cables, end bearings and center bearing. A worn cable fails soon after a new spring goes in. See our cable repair page for what we look for.
  • Wind the springs to the right turns and secure them.
  • Test the balance with the opener disconnected. A balanced door stays put when you lift it halfway.
  • Reconnect the opener, reset its travel limits and test the safety reverse.

Ask any company to say these steps back to you. A tech who skips the balance test is leaving you with a door that wears out the opener.

What spring repair costs, and the cheap phone quote

We do not publish a price list, because door weight and spring type change the job. Here is what three outside guides say. Raynor Door Authority lists spring replacement at $120 to $350, in a guide dated September 16, 2025. HomeAdvisor puts springs at $180 to $350, in a guide updated June 20, 2026. Raynor also says emergency or after hours jobs can double the price.

A second pair, a high cycle upgrade or a heavy wood door can push you above those ranges. That is normal if you are told why before work starts.

Now the trap. The Better Business Bureau warned in October 2023 that many scams advertise a low service fee, then demand more money for added repairs. It also warns about companies that show up at the top of a search with a generic name and no real address, and about anyone who wants payment in full before the work is done.

A price you hear on the phone before anyone has seen the door cannot be a real price for your spring. We give you a firm written price at your door before we touch anything. Our spring coupon takes $100 off a broken spring replacement.

The Las Vegas angle

Heat is the thing everyone blames, so start with facts. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas lists a normal of 78.2 days a year at 100 degrees or higher, 40.5 days at 105 or higher and 9.4 days at 110 or higher. Those are 1991 to 2020 normals, in a file updated April 11, 2026.

What really ends a spring is the cycle count. Many Valley homes are tract homes built between 1995 and 2008, and a door put in during 2005 and used four times a day passed 10,000 cycles around 2012. If that door still has its first springs, it is long past its design life.

If your door was installed new and you never changed the springs, you are on borrowed time. Ask for a high cycle pair the day you replace them. See our full spring repair guide for the bigger picture.

What to tell us on the phone

Give us these details and we can bring the right springs on the first trip.

  • Did you hear a bang, and when?
  • How many springs you can see, and whether one is split.
  • Single or double door, and whether it is steel, insulated, wood or glass.
  • Whether a cable has come off the drum or hangs loose.
  • A photo of the spring, the bar and any label you can read.
  • Whether a car is trapped inside. If so, see our emergency spring repair page.

Call (702) 888-0085 or book online. Do not try to measure the spring yourself. We measure at the door.

Before you hire anyone

The Nevada State Contractors Board checklist says to hire licensed contractors, get a written contract and not pay cash. It also caps a down payment at $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less. Ask for the license number and look it up. Ours is NSCB 0082445, and you can check it on our license page.

The Board also runs a Residential Recovery Fund that pays up to $40,000 per claim for losses from work by licensed contractors on a single family home. It does not cover unlicensed contractors, which is one more reason to check first.

Then ask three questions. What are the wire size, inside diameter and length of the springs you will install? What is the cycle rating? What is on the written price, and what is not? A real company answers all three without a pause.

Common Questions

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

Please do not try. Springs hold huge force and need special tools to wind safely. People get badly hurt doing this at home. Pro replacement is fast and costs less than an ER visit.

How long do springs last in Las Vegas?

Standard springs last about 7 to 10 years here. Our heat wears them out faster than mild climates. Long life springs rated for 25,000 or more cycles can last decades.

Why replace both springs if only one broke?

Both springs have the same age and wear. Replacing both on one visit costs a little more now and saves you a second service call in a few months.

How much does garage door spring repair cost in Las Vegas?

It depends on the size and weight of your door and the springs it needs, so we quote at the door. You get a firm written price before any work starts. Our coupon takes $100 off any broken spring replacement.

Can you fix a broken garage spring the same day?

Yes, on most calls. Our trucks carry the common torsion spring sizes. If your car is trapped, call our 24/7 line and we will come any hour.

Can I open the garage door by hand with a broken spring?

Do not try. Without the spring the door can weigh hundreds of pounds, and it can fall fast when released. Keep people clear and call a pro.

Can I use my garage door if only one of two springs is broken?

We say no. The other spring is carrying the full door weight and can fail without warning. The opener also strains and can strip its gears.

How long does a spring replacement take?

A pro can usually finish in about an hour, according to Clopay. A crooked door, a worn cable or a trapped car can add time.

Is it worth fixing a garage door spring instead of replacing the door?

Yes, in almost every case. A spring is a wear part, and a new pair costs far less than a new door. If the door itself is damaged or very old, we will tell you at the door.

Should I spray lubricant on a garage door spring?

Leave it to your pro. A tune up uses a lubricant made for garage doors, and your hands should stay away from a spring under tension.
